President Buhari Needs To Assent To Anti-Sexual Harassment Bill — CAJA

President Buhari Needs To Assent To Anti-Sexual Harassment B

The Centre for Awareness on Justice and Accountability (CAJA) says there is need for President Muhammadu Buhari to assent the  Sexual Harassment Prohibition Bill.

Executive director of CAJA, Kabiru Dakata, at a stakeholder’s dialogue meeting on the anti-sexual harassment law in tertiary institutions in Nigeria held in Kano said assent to the bill will curb many cases of sexual harassment in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.

The bill has already been passed by the Nigerian Senate while it has scaled through the third reading at the House of Representatives.

Dakata expressed worry over the rise of sexual harassment and intimidation in tertiary institutions across the country, adding that students must be protected while exercising their right to education,

Representative of the ministry of Justice at the program, Temitope Lawal said the ministry is in full support of bill and will ensure the implementation.

Some students at the advocacy cluster shared the experiences they had with lecturers who attempted to assault them or their colleague sexually.

A survey conducted in 2018 by the World Bank, reveals that 70 per cent of female graduates from Nigerian tertiary institutions have been sexually harassed in school, with the main perpetrators being classmates or lecturers.
