President Discloses Plans To Reopen Land Borders

President Muhammadu Buhari said that the land borders will soon be reopened.

He stated that the closure of the border was important to pass the message that the country would not allow illegal smuggling of weapons and drugs into Nigeria.

This was disclosed at the security meeting with state governors at the Presidential Villa.

According to the Senior Special Assistant to the president on media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, the president was quoted to have said, “Now that the message has sunk in with our neighbours, we are looking into reopening the borders as soon as possible.”

Governors at the meeting were urged by the president to collaborate with traditional rulers in their individual states to fight insecurity.

The president touched on a number of other matters like the issue of the free flow of weapons across borders, especially after the passing of former Libyan president, Muammar Gadafi.

Buhari said that the sub-region was vulnerable.

On August 19, 2019, the president announced a partial border closure, citing the flow of contrabands across the country's borders.
