Police officers from the Delta Police Command clashed with protesters at the Otovwodo area of the East West road in Ughelli, amid a gun scare on Friday.
The previously peaceful protest, which had been ongoing for two days in the Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State, turned violent after a police officer shot at a protester.
Allnews reported that protest has turned violence in some states. This medium reported that hoodlums vandalized the Red Cross office in Gujba, Damaturu, Yobe State, destroying property and setting a vehicle on fire.
The shooting led to other protesters setting tires on fire and throwing sachet water at the police and local government officials.
A protester said, "They were protesting Friday morning with placards towards the Otovwodo junction when the police bracketed them and prevented them from coming towards the junction.
"They were not carrying anything dangerous except for the placards in their hands when the police waylaid them and started tear gassing them."
He said one of the protesters who was shot in the chest was hurriedly conveyed to the hospital by a sister security agent, it was gathered.
"While shooting tear gas, the police were being pelted with sachets of water by the protesters and as they were driving away, they opened fire on the protesters and one person was hit in his chest.
"Their sister security agents helped to rush the injured protester to one of the hospitals probably for the hospital to accept him since it was a bullet injury," the source alleged.
