PSV Win Dutch Cup
PSV Eindhoven successfully defended their Dutch Cup title with a 3-2 shootout victory against Ajax Amsterdam on Sunday.
In a dour final at the Feyenoord Stadium, the shootout was of poor quality, and Ajax missed three of their kicks, allowing PSV to claim back-to-back wins in the competition, having beaten the Amsterdam side in last year’s final as well.
Ajax took the lead in the first half through a Jarrad Branthwaite own goal, but PSV equalized in the second half through Thorgan Hazard's goal, sending the game to extra time and penalties.
Brian Brobbey, Jurrien Timber, and Edson Alvarez all missed in the shootout for Ajax, while Fabio Silva scored the winning penalty for PSV.
PSV secured their 11th Dutch Cup victory, and they are now nine behind Ajax’s record tally of 20 titles.
Despite the loss, Ajax remains on top of the Eredivisie, six points clear of second-placed PSV with four games left to play.
