PWD Bill: Osun SPAG Lauds Progress, Appreciates Governor Ade

The State Partnership Against Gender-Based Violence on Women and Girls (SPAG) with Disability Committee has lauded the approval of the governor.

The appreciation is coming on the heels of the aftermath of the Executive order for an expedition of the Osun State Person With Disability Bill by Governor Ademola Adeleke.

This is as the SPAG Committee of the EMPOWER Project applauded the decision taken by the Osun government for the Special Needs Community.

The Empower Project is a programme of the Society For Life Changers And Good Parental Care, SOLIFE sponsored by the United Nations Entity For the Empowerment of Women (UN-Women) and the United Nations Trust Fund to End Violence Against Women.

The EMPOWER Project Committee made this known in an emergency meeting held after the pronouncement of the Osun State, Ademola Adeleke at the distribution of mobility aids on Tuesday.

Addressing members of the Committee, the Chairman of Osun SPAG, Aremu Stephen Akinyele commended the Committee for its tenacious advocacy in ensuring the Persons With Disability Bill becomes law in Osun.

Akinyele added that the PWD Bill once passed into law as Prohibition Against Persons With Disability Law will protect, improve and bring development to the life of the clusters of the special needs community in Osun.

Aremu specially thanked the EMPOWER Project sponsor for supporting the project which positively impacted the lives of the PWDs, particularly women and girls with disability.

Charging the Osun SPAG with more advocacy to achieve total success in the production of the PWD Bill, he also reiterated the objective of the EMPOWER Project to the target beneficiaries.

In her vote of thanks, the Osun SPAG Committee Vice Chairman, Chief Superintendent of Police, Folashade Odoro thanked the committee for consistent advocacy on the plight of women and girls with disabilities.

Odoro also disclosed that they have made good progress.

Commending the unrelenting effort of the Committee, she urged that advocacy continued on the directive of the Osun Governor on the Ministry of Justice legal framework and relevant stakeholders till the manifestation of the Persons with Disability Bill.

Addressing the committee, the Project Manager, Adeola Falana recalled that the SPAG Committee as the leading non-governmental organisation on Persons With Disability affairs has not rested on its oars in its drive to ensure that.

Falana urged that like other states in Nigeria, Osun also has to start using the PWDs Law for the special needs community.

She maintained that part of the objectives of the EMPOWER Project is ending violence against women and girls with disability, having access to education, quality healthcare and other basic necessities of life, a right that belongs to them as citizens of the state and the country at large.
