Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. has launched the Wireless AR Smart Viewer Reference Design, powered by the Snapdragon XR2 Platform, as another step toward making extended reality (XR) the next computing platform.

The new wireless AR Smart Viewer reference design enables OEMs and ODMs to prototype and bring to market lightweight, premium AR glasses that enable immersive experiences that unlock the metaverse more easily and cost-effectively.

According to Qualcomm, the premium Snapdragon XR2 Platform has been redesigned to fit into a slimmer, smaller AR glass form factor.

The Goertek-developed AR reference design hardware features a 40% smaller profile and a more ergonomically balanced weight distribution3 for improved comfort.

The smart glasses have a dual micro-OLED binocular display with 1920 x 1080 resolution per eye, frame rates up to 90Hz, and no motion blur for a smooth AR experience.

The smart viewer's dual monochrome and RGB cameras offer six degrees of freedom (6DoF) head tracking and hand tracking with gesture recognition for AR precision.

The reference design, which takes a system-level approach, allows for a wireless split processing architecture to distribute computing tasks between the smartphone and the AR glass.

The device achieves a 3ms latency between the smartphone and AR glass to provide genuinely immersive AR experiences.

The reference design for the FastConnect 6900 solution provides uncompromised Wi-Fi 6 / 6E and Bluetooth connectivity, allowing customers to experience the fastest commercially available speeds and range.

System integrators and application developers benefit from the new FastConnect XR Software Suite's optimised features, which include:

Improve M2R2P (motionto-render-to-photon) delay, minimise jitter, and eliminate undesired interference by giving XR traffic improved control and channel access.

Include custom power modes for low-power operation without sacrificing latency performance for longer, more consistent XR experiences. Qualcomm Technologies will continue to enable the broad consumer and enterprise needs to help scale AR to the masses by combining premium technology and form factor innovation.

The Wireless AR Smart Viewer reference design is now accessible to a limited number of partners, with broader availability expected in the coming months.
