Rape/Police Brutality: Nigerian Celebrities Partake In #Blac

Some Nigerian celebrities have joined in #BlackTuesday, a campaign against police brutality and rape.

Tiwa savage had on Saturday announced Tuesday, June 2 as a blackout in the music industry to provoke accountability and change.

In an Instagram post, Tiwa said the blackout was to disconnect from work and reconnect with the community as a result of the recent events, hence the need to reconnect with the community.

AllNews reports that the trend sprang up in the United States music industry to fight racism and police brutality after a black man George Floyd was killed by Minneapolis police last week.

Recall that a 16-year-old girl identified as Tina, was shot by the police in the Iyana Oworo area of Lagos state and a 22-year-old undergraduate student of the University of Benin was allegedly raped and murdered in a RCCG branch in Edo state.

On Tuesday, Burna Boy, Wizkid, Timi Dakolo, Tiwa Savage, Mr Eazi, Davido, Toyin Abraham, Ice Prince, Small doctor, among others joined in the protest by going dark on social media.

These past few days have been extremely saddening and depressing around the world .Police brutality and rape ? ??? ?? My heart is heavy beyond words , I don’t want to birth my child in a society like this ...TINA EZEKWE and UWA OMOZOWA are the recent victims to the inhumanity! Will they be the last ? The same men that are supposed to protect us are out here killing us and raping us ?? ? It’s heartbreaking. These men in uniform have been taking lives and treating humans like animals . My heart goes out to the families of these victims and to everyone who has experienced police brutality or rape and being reminded of the experience because of what’s going on right now , You will find peace and we will get justice . We want justice for these beautiful souls , we want a better Nigeria. We want to feel safe in a country we call home . #justiceforTina #justiceforuwa

Rape and racial injustice are crimes against humanity, they are vicious, insidious and violent acts that no human should commit or commend. The stance on rape should be linear and final, there should be no grey areas, no “buts”, only that the perpetrator(s) of the act is to blame and the victim completely blameless. From now on, men and women alike need to be educated. Men need to be taught the concept of consent, we need to teach them empathy and compassion. We need to teach men that a woman’s body is hers and hers alone. We need to end stigmatisation and victimization of rape victims, it must STOP. - - Black people deserve and require more than we’re currently getting! I implore you all to get involved, no contribution is too small, no platform is too small #nojusticenopeace #justiceforgeorgefloyd #justiceforuwa #stoprapeculture #justicefortina #stoppolicebrutality #blackouttuesday
