Real Madrid's Vinicius Subjected To Racial Abuse At Mallorca

Vinicius Junior

Fans of Mallorca were caught on video racially abusing Real Madrid's Brazilian forward Vinicius Jr. during Mallorca's 1-0 win against Real Madrid on Sunday at Son Moix stadium.

The video shows the supporters calling Vinicius a monkey and was published on social media by DAZN.

Mallorca has yet to respond to the incident, but in a radio interview, club manager Javier Aguirre denied that his players targeted Vinicius in the heated match in which Vinicius received 10 fouls, the most by any player in LaLiga this season.

This marks at least the third time Vinicius has faced racial abuse by fans, previously happening in November 2021 at Camp Nou, September 2022 at Atletico, and December 2022 at Valladolid.

Spanish police are also investigating a possible hate crime against Vinicius after a mannequin wearing his No. 20 shirt was hung from a bridge near the club's training centre ahead of the Madrid derby two weeks ago.

Prosecutors in Madrid declined to press charges in September over racist chanting aimed at Vinicius, citing it as not constituting a crime.

Vinicius, Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti, and teammates have been calling for LaLiga and authorities to take action to protect him from "a hunt" by opponents' defenders.

Vinicius is currently the most fouled player in Europe's top seven leagues, with 79 fouls this season, followed by his countryman Neymar at PSG with 59 fouls.
