The Sokoto state governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal has called on the federal government to recruit from communities affected by bandits to fight banditry.
The governor made the call when delegation of the North West Governor's Forum visited him on Wednesday.
The delegation led by Governor of Katsina State, Aminu Bello Masari, visited to commiserate with the state over recent attack that led to the death of 23 travellers in the state.
Tambuwal said the recruits should be recruited in the fight against banditry because have know their communities better.
While calling on the federal government, he stated that, "Recruit immediately from communities affected by banditry for the sole purpose of addressing these challenges, train the people from those communities, arm them, give them licenses, give them better weapons to face these criminals."
While noting the need for special forces in combating bandits, he said, “If you are finding it difficult to recruit people into the Arm Forces. Have special forces for all these areas and states affected with banditry. Recruit them purposely for this. They have knowledge of the terrain and the commitment to defend themselves. So, give them the backing of the law.'
“So, I am appealing to Mr President to consider the possibility of taking this up and I am confident it will work out well," he added.
