Rema has reacted after the remix of his smash single ‘Calm Down’ featuring Selena Gomez topped the number one song in the Indian Music Industry chart week dated January 9, 2023.
The singer shared the screenshot of the chart via his Twitter page on Monday evening, alongside an old video where he said he wants his music to break into the Indian zone.
“I’ve been seeing that comment and I need to make good use of it.
"Some people think it gets to me, but it doesn’t get to me that I sound Indian.
"Some people said I sound Arabian. They said I sound Indian and Arabian.
“I want to use that bad comment to my advantage. I like to get in zones; not just English zones. This music, this Afrobeats, I want to take it.
“Why can’t we get in the Indian zone? Why can’t we shut down India?” Rema said in the video.

When the ‘Dumebi’ crooner first came into the mainstream, his sound was denigrated while many people said he sounds Indian.
Speaking on his sound (taken from the spring/summer 2020 issue of Dazed), Rema described his musical style as unique.
“(My sound is) hard to explain. It’s simply freedom, and just enjoying what I’m doing in the studio.
"I believe my music is evergreen because there is nowhere else you (can) go around the world and find this type of sound.”
