Reps charge FRSC on need to reduce road accidents

The House of Representatives has charged the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, to take urgent action to reduce accidents on Nigerian roads.

Member Adedeji Dhikrullahi Olajide gave the charge on Wednesday while reacting to Tuesday’s road accident that occurred in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

No fewer than sixteen people lost their lives as a result of a road Tuesday accident.

Olajide who represents Ibadan North West/Ibadan South West federal constituency at the National Assembly in his reaction called on FRSC to take urgent action to address the ugly situation.

The lawmaker in a statement through his Media Aide, Tolu Mustapha decried the recklessness on Nigerian roads.

He attributed the tragedy to a combination of factors, including over-speeding, dangerous driving and poor vehicle maintenance.

Olajide said, “This carnage is a stark reminder of the urgent need for all stakeholders to join hands in ensuring that our roads are safe for all users.

“We must take concrete steps to address the issues of speeding, dangerous driving, and poor vehicle maintenance, which are the major causes of these avoidable tragedies.

“My heart goes out to the families of the victims of this avoidable tragedy and prayed that the souls of the departed rest in peace.

"I called on the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC,  and other relevant agencies to intensify efforts to ensure that drivers adhere to traffic rules and regulations and also urged the Oyo State Government to fix the deplorable roads in the state, which was a major contributory factor to the accident."
