Resolutions on security to be submitted by reps to NSA

House of Reps

The House of Representatives has directed the Clerk of the Green Chamber to compile its security-related resolutions for transmission to the Office of the National Security Adviser.

The decision followed the consideration of a motion sponsored by the Minority Leader of the House, Kingsley Chinda, along with 28 others, during Wednesday’s plenary session.

Chinda, representing Obio/Akpor Federal Constituency, Rivers State, expressed his concerns about the worsening security over the past few years, noting its negative impact on the cost of living, particularly food prices.

He highlighted that despite the House's resolutions, there has been no effective implementation to alleviate the resulting issues.

“Many Nigerians would be subjected to food insecurity if nothing is done to address the challenges of insecurity in the country."

He cited the International Centre for Investigative Reporting, noting that over 380 Nigerians had been kidnapped in January 2024.

He noted that the Food and Agriculture Organisation projected that over 26.5 million Nigerians were projected to be food insecure in 2024.

“Unless the House of Representatives matches its resolutions with actions, the faith that the citizens have in the House will wane, and more Nigerians will continue to suffer the negative effects of insecurity in all sectors of the economy.”

Following a voice vote, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, who presided over the session, mandated the Clerk of the House “to compile all House Resolutions on security and forward the compilation to the office of the Security Adviser and the Committee on Legislative Compliance for action.”
