Rice And Tomato Were Cheaper In February - NBS

The National Bureau of Statistics released its selected food prices watch report on Friday, where it revealed changes in certain foods (eggs, rice, tomatoes, and yam) for the month of February 2021.

The report showed that the average price of a dozen Agric eggs of medium size increased year-on-year by 15.62 percent and month-on-month by 1.46 percent to N518.30 in February 2021 from N510. 84 in January 2021. The average price of a piece of medium-sized Agric eggs increased year-on-year by 20.50 percent and month-on-month by 2.47 percent to N47.35 in February 2021 from N46.21 in January 2021.

It was also reported that the average price of 1kg of tomato decreased month-on-month by 7.07 percent to N269.18 from its previous average of N289.66 but was still up year-on-year by 11.33 percent.

The NBS also reported a month-on-month decrease in the average price of 1kg of rice (imported high quality sold loose) by 2.57 percent to N537.37, but a year-on-year increase of 21.02 percent.

Also, the average price of 1kg of yam tuber increased year-on-year by 28.11 percent and month on month by 3.47 percent to N242.82 in February 2021 from N234.67 in January 2021.

The consistent year-on-year increase in prices shows that the economy still has a mountain to climb to attain recovery, as short-term improvements keep disappearing in long-term evaluations.
