Rights Group Hails Ugwuanyi's Intervention In Herdsmen Attac

Suspected herdsmen

The Centre for Victims of Extra-Judicial Killings and Torture, (CVEKT AFRICA) has commended the Enugu State governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, for his prompt intervention in the herdsmen menace in Eha-Amufu.

The group praised the decisive step of the governor following the invasion and killing of five members of Ogbete-Mgbuji village in the Eha-Amufu community of Isi-Uzo Local Government Area of Enugu State by suspected Fulani herdsmen.

This was contained in a press statement signed by the Executive Director of CVEKT, Reverend Father Tony Amarube.

“CVEKT is highly impressed by Governor Ugwuanyi’s proactive reaction by promptly organizing an emergency security summit in Eha- Amufu last Saturday to restore normalcy in Mgbuji village and Eha-Amufu community as well as to forestall future security breaches in the area.

“While commending Governor Ugwuanyi for this suave move to secure the lives and property of Isi-Uzo people, a move that has been typical of his administration, CVEKT condemns in strong terms the constant harassment of Eha-Amufu citizens by suspected Fulani herdsmen and calls on security agencies in Enugu State to implement the recommendations and prescriptions of the emergency security summit without fear or favour and with strict impartiality.

“We view the incessant violence against the people of Eha-Amufu by suspected Fulani herdsmen not only as an affront to the powers of the Enugu State government but also as an abuse of Governor Ugwuanyi’s humane and peaceful approach to Fulani herders/communities conflict in parts of Enugu State, in his bid to ensure peaceful and brotherly co-existence between Enugu State citizens and Fulani herdsmen as well as other non-Igbo groups and individuals in the State.

The group also cautioned Fulani herders and other trouble mongers in the state "not to construe Governor Ugwuanyi’s humane and civilized approach to herder-community conflicts as cowardice or lack of gut to invoke the powers of office as the chief security officer of Enugu State to deal decisively with perpetrators of violence against the people of the state.

“This is particularly as it concerns the frequent violence against Eha-Amufu people who have a close socio-cultural affinity with Governor Ugwuanyi’s homestead which would justify and indeed oblige him to take every step to defend the lives and property of his people with all the forces of State power.

“For the avoidance of doubt, anybody who chooses to abuse Governor Ugwuanyi’s compassionate approach to issues and conflicts had better not tempt the Governor’s lion spirit and his potential to become a Governor Wike of Enugu State, but which is not in his nature or leadership style," the statement added.
