Rivers: Gunmen kill one following tussle for LG chairmen ten

One Endwell Awunze has been slain by gunmen at Ula-Pata-Ahoada in the Ahaoda Local Government Area of Rivers State. The gunmen are thought to be cultists.

The dead worked as an oil pipeline monitoring employee until his passing.

In the Okporowo village in Ahoada East LGA, Awunze was accused of being a "whistleblower" against cultism and other violent acts.

According to sources, cultists murdered him on Tuesday night after following him for a while.

According to a local, when Awunze left the protest site from Ahoada East Council to voice his opposition to the extension of local government chairmen's terms, cultists followed him and killed him.

The source said that three assailants who had already set up an ambush fired shots at Awunze when he was riding on a motorbike along the Ula-Pata route.

It was learned that the deceased passed away instantly, and the motorbike driver was shot and taken to the hospital.

According to the source, until 7 a.m. on Wednesday, June 19, Awunze's remains remained at the murder site.

The Rivers State Police Command has yet to comment on this incident.

Meanwhile, the Centre for Basic Rights Protection and Accountability Campaign, a human rights organisation, has raised concern about the political crisis's harmful impact on state inhabitants.

Comrade Prince Wiro, National Coordinator of the organization in reaction to the incident said: “I am worried that cultists and other criminal elements may take advantage of the chaotic situation in the state to begin to perpetrate evil.I urge the Political gladiators in the state to carry out their activities within the confines of the law as we hear that some mischievous politicians are recruiting all manner of violent personality to achieve their aim.

“I equally call on the Police and other relevant security agencies in the state to double their effort to arrest security challenges that will arise as a result of the political crisis.”
