The Vice-Chancellor of Rivers State University, Port Harcourt, Professor Nlerum Okegbule has warned the members of staff of the institution against engaging in corrupt practices to avoid the risk of getting sacked.
The VC gave the warning while giving the opening declaration at the capacity building workshop organised for senior non-academic staff at the varsity's Senate Chamber in Port Harcourt.
Okogbule while giving the declaration noted the university's stand on corruption.
“If you say because you are in a particular position and you start collecting N5,000, N10,000 as the case may be from students, when you lose your job between one to five years, you will know what it means.
“So don’t get involved in unethical things because the consequences are dire, including outright dismissal.
"For the non-academic staff, it is important for them to shun some of the unethical conducts that are pervading in general society,” the VC warned.
He further stated the effectiveness of Rivers University's reward and punishment system, saying: “Those who are working very hard, at the appropriate time are appraised and promoted.
“Of course, those who are delinquent, we also punish them appropriately in accordance with the rules and regulations of the university.”
He however reacted to the cordial relationship between the management and the staff, appreciating them for their hard work and for upholding the ethics of the institution.
