Former Belgium coach Roberto Martinez has been appointed as the new manager of Portugal's national squad, the country's football federation (FPF) confirmed on Monday.

"I appreciate the enthusiasm and ambition with which he (Martinez) received the invitation," FPF President Fernando Gomes told a news conference. "This is an important moment for the national team".

Roberto Martínez is 49 years old, married to Beth Thompson, whom he met while playing for Motherwell, with whom he has two daughters, Luella and Safiana.

Martinez was the head coach of Belgium for more than a year while they topped FIFA's ranking as the best football nation in the World.

He resigned from his role as Belgium's coach after another disappointing World Cup outing which saw them eliminated in the Group stage.
