Lisbon city council has announced that Portuguese football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo will be awarded a medal for his contributions to the city.
The five-time Ballon d'Or winner, who was born and raised on the island of Madeira, arrived in Lisbon at the age of 12 to join the academy of Sporting Club de Portugal.
Although he left for Manchester United in 2003, the city council stated that he is "intimately linked to the history" of Lisbon.
The medal is a tribute to Ronaldo's achievements and his passion for the city, which he has promoted and projected around the world.
Mayor Carlos Moedas said that Ronaldo is "a great Lisboan" and that his contributions to the city have not been fully recognised.
The exact date of the medal ceremony has not been announced yet.
