Ronaldo, Varane, Sancho - Is “Glory, Glory Man United” Fading or Reality?

Ronaldo, Varane, Sancho - Is “Glory, Glory Man United” F

“Glory, Glory Manchester United” chants that cover the atmosphere at Old Trafford especially with the return of Cristiano Ronaldo might be fading as the team continues to find its feet on the European and domestic stage.

Manchester United meant business this season as they signed Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund, Raphael Varane from Real Madrid, and five-time Ballon d'Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo from Juventus in what on paper was to be a fruitful season for the Manchester side who’s doing all to bring back the former glory days many once saw at the team.

In Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, United trusted their successful campaigns bringing in stars to complement the crop of stars he already has. Unfortunately, it hasn’t gone as planned for Solskjaer whose team has struggled this season for consistency in all spheres of the pitch.

When United announced the signing of Sancho first, the Stretford End faithful got into jubilation for a player, who’s been on the team’s radar for long. Sancho has been a star for Borrusia Dortmund, lighting up the German League and Europe with his talents, complementing a partnership with Paco Alacer and later Erling Haaland, and finding assists for his strike partners.

Varane joined following a 10-year stay at Real Madrid winning the UEFA Champions League 4 times, the La Liga, and staying at the top of the game for long. He’s a World Cup winner with France as he won the trophy in 2018, putting himself at the forefront of world football.

Cristiano Ronaldo needs no introduction, and when news broke out of Manchester City wanting to sign the elite forward, the world had lips on the matter with the player trending on the internet as usual. United moved swiftly as they wouldn’t want their legend and former player don the blue shirt of Manchester and made all in bringing back the player to Old Trafford. On his arrival, he met a full-studded stadium chanting appraisal to his 2 goals scored on his return against Newcastle United. He’ll follow that up with 9 goals in 12 goals so far this season, with most coming in injury time, saving the job for Ole Solksjaer.

Manchester United has been struggling this season and many would put that out on the manager’s tactical approach and how the team is set up to play. Now, the manager opts for a 3-5-2 formation following the team’s embarrassing defeat to rival Liverpool at Old Trafford. Liverpool won 5-0 in style. The team also lost 2-0 to Manchester City at Old Trafford. That’s was an embarrassing game for United as they only managed a single shot on target during the game. The side had more shots at their own keeper than the opposition keeper and had fewer touches of the ball during the course of the game.

What stands out and what people point to in these defeats are not the defeat itself but the way United loses and how they play the game. According to former players, they’ve stated their opinions on the team as the team plays with no direction, no tactical awareness, and no proper setup. Players don’t know where to stay, know not who to mark.

Manchester United last won a trophy in 2016, following Jose Mourinho’s reign. Ever since Solskjaer has reached the semifinals and finals of major trophies and faded. They lost the UEFA Europa League to Villareal last term and this season, they’ve been knocked out of the Carabao Cup in the first round against West Ham.

The only trophy to play for now is the UEFA Champions League, the FA Cup, and the Premier League. Let’s wait and see if their playing form would change after the international break or see if the board would take an action in relieving Solkjaer off his duty.

Till then, the “Glory, Glory Man United” has been silenced for a while, the United supporters are tired and would hope one day, the chants would surely kick off in a fruitful fashion.
