Rotational presidency not Nigeria's priority — Tanko

Rotational presidency not Nigeria's priority — Tanko

The Chief Spokesperson for the Peter Obi/Datti Baba-Ahmed Presidential Campaign Council, Alhaji Yunusa Tanko, has stated that reforming the electoral process is more urgent than the proposed single-tenure rotational presidency.

Tanko emphasized that deepening democracy to ensure the emergence of credible leaders should be the focus of the ongoing constitutional amendment process.

"While the ideas of single tenure and rotational presidency are good, they shouldn't be the priority now.

"What we need is electoral reform that guarantees credible elections. Once we achieve that, we can discuss tenure of office", he said.

Tanko, who said this while speaking to journalists on Tuesday in Abuja, urged the National Assembly to focus on reforming the electoral system to promote democracy, rather than tenure of office.

"Let us reform the electoral system to make it clean and clear so that we can have credible elections," Tanko stressed.

In contrast, Alhaji Shettima Yerima, National President of the Arewa Youth Consultative Forum, supports the idea of a rotational presidency and a single term of six years for the president and governors.

He, however, expressed reservations about the rotational aspect, citing democratic principles.

"It's good, but we must allow it to be democratic. He who has the number should take it, and he who doesn't should wait for his time," Yerima said.

It will be recalled that recently, 35 members of the House of Representatives proposed a bill seeking a single term of six years for the President and state governors, with rotation among the six geopolitical zones.

The legislators argued that this would reduce the cost of governance, unite the country, ensure seamless power transition, and promote development.
