The Russian-led Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) remains ready to send a mission to the Armenian-Azerbaijani border, the former head of the bloc Stanislav Zas said on Monday.
Zas said; "As for the direction of the CSTO mission to provide assistance to Armenia – of the CSTO mission to the Armenian-Azerbaijani border, this remains in force. This can be implemented.”
Relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan have been tense since 1991 when the Armenian military illegally occupied Karabakh, a territory internationally recognised as part of Azerbaijan.
In November, both countries accused each other of a shootout on their shared border in Azerbaijan's region of Karabakh.
The Azerbaijani Defense Ministry said Armenian armed forces opened fire on Azerbaijani army positions in the Lachin region.
The Armenian Defense Ministry too also accused Azerbaijan of opening fire on its combat positions in the eastern part of the border zone, with calibre firearms and mortars.
