Rwandan Genocide Funder, Félicien Kabuga, Arrested In Franc

One of the culprits of the 1994 Rwandan genocide, Félicien Kabuga, has been arrested after he was caught in France living under a false identity.

The news of his arrest was announced by the Justice Ministry in France, who said that the 84-year-old Kabuga had been living somewhere near Paris, where he was apprehended.

Kabuga was allegedly one of the big sponsors of the genocide that saw the deaths of an estimated 800,000 and has been in hiding ever since the end of the war.

He had been charged by the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda for crimes against humanity, while the United States had placed a $5m reward on him.

The Rwandan genocide saw the mass killing of the minority Tutsi tribe from the hands of the Hutu extremists, stretching for three months.

Kabuga's arrest serves as "a reminder that those responsible for genocide can be brought to account, even 26 years after their crimes," according to a top UN prosecutor, Serge Brammertz.

Serge also stated that “For international justice, Kabuga’s arrest demonstrates that we can succeed when we have the international community’s support.

“This result is a tribute to the unwavering commitment of the United Nations Security Council, which established the Mechanism to continue the accountability process in Rwanda and the former Yugoslavia.”
