Kazakhstan's Elena Rybakina is the Italian Open champion following Anhelina Kalinina's retirement in the second set of Saturday's final through a leg injury in Rome.
The Wimbledon champion was leading 6-4 1-0 when the Ukrainian retired in tears after 65 minutes.
This made it the second time in the tournament that the 23-year-old had won after her opponent retired.
The first time was against world number one Iga Swiatek who was forced to retire in the quarter-finals.
“I want to wish Kalininia a speedy recovery because she is a really good friend of mine and I am really happy for all of her results," Rybakina said courtside after her victory.
"She did a good job and hopefully can recover for the French Open.
“A big thanks to the crowd and everyone who stayed and watched till the end.
"It was not easy for us but not easy for you with all the rain today so thank you so much for the support.”
On her part, Kalinina said: "I'm really sorry that I couldn't play. I was trying to do my best.
"Congratulations for the title and everything you have done this year.
"It's really inspiring and hopefully I can get to your level someday."
The win gives the Rybakina a top-four seeding at the French Open, which starts at Roland Garros on 28 May.
