Samsung Launches Samsung Wallet

Samsung Electronics on Thursday announced the release of Samsung Wallet, a new platform that allows Galaxy users to store digital keys, boarding tickets, identification cards, and more in a single, secure mobile app.

According to the business, Samsung Wallet merges Samsung Pay and Samsung Pass into a single safe platform.

Earlier this year, during the manufacturer's Unpacked event, the mobile wallet was originally teased.

Galaxy users in the United States, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy, and Spain can migrate to the new Samsung Wallet by opening the Samsung Pay or Samsung Pass applications on their eligible Samsung Pay-enabled Galaxy phones running Android 9 Pie or later starting on Thursday.

Samsung Wallet is safeguarded by Samsung Knox's defence-grade security and makes use of the open Galaxy ecosystem by connecting with Samsung Blockchain Wallet for easy cryptocurrency monitoring and SmartThings to unlock doors.

“Samsung Wallet is bringing a new level of everyday convenience to mobile devices with a totally safe and secure environment for storing digital keys, cards and more,” said Jeanie Han, EVP and Head of Digital Life, MX Business at Samsung Electronics.

“As part of our ongoing commitment to open ecosystems, we will continue to expand on the capabilities of Samsung Wallet by working closely with our trusted partners and developers.”

Users will get instant access to their payment cards, loyalty and membership cards, and more with Samsung Wallet. It also works with Samsung Blockchain Wallet, allowing users to keep track of their digital asset portfolio and check the value of their cryptocurrencies.

Samsung Wallet also contains Samsung Pass, which securely stores passwords and confirms users' identities using biometric data to log into apps and services, according to the company.

Important documents, such as evidence of COVID-19 vaccination, can also be stored in the mobile wallet. Samsung Wallet will enable official IDs such as mobile driver's licenses and student IDs from specified universities later this year.

Samsung Wallet now works with SmartThings to provide digital car keys for BMW, Genesis, and Hyundai cars.

Users will be able to lock and unlock their cars, start engines, and more directly from their mobile wallet thanks to the integration.

The feature is available on the BMW 1-8 Series, X5, X5 M, X6, X6 M, X7, Z4, iX3, iX, and i4 cars built after July 2020. Genesis GV60 models launched after September 2021, G90 models launched after December 2021, and Hyundai Palisade models introduced after May 2022 are also eligible for the feature.

In addition, starting with select Korean Air flights, consumers can store their boarding cards in their Samsung Wallet. When consumers will be able to add boarding passes from other airlines is still unknown.

Samsung Wallet is protected by Samsung Knox, according to the company. To protect users' sensitive data, safeguards such as fingerprint recognition and encryption are in place.

Samsung also mentions that certain important vital components in Samsung Wallet are kept in a separate environment dubbed the embedded "Secure Element" to assist defend against digital and physical hacking.
