Saudi Releases Princess, Daughter After 3 Years In Jail

The Saudi authorities have released a princess and her daughter who had been in prison for nearly 3 years.

According to The Guardian, a human rights group said on Saturday that Basma bint Saud, a royal family member and a constitutional monarchy has been detained since March 2019.

The ALQST for Human Rights said on Twitter that; "Basma bint Saud Al Saud and her daughter Suhoud have been released."

“She was denied the medical care she needed for a potentially life threatening condition and at no point during her detention has any charge been levelled against her.”

Princess Basmah was arrested shortly before a planned trip to Switzerland for medical treatment. The nature of her illness was never disclosed.

She was kept in Al-Ha’ir prison, where numerous other political detainees were held.

According to her family, her detention was likely due to her record as an outspoken critic on abuses.
