School Fence Crushes Woman To Death

A school fence perimeter in Nyendo, Uganda collapsed on a 25-year-old woman on Wednesday, March 29, 2023, killing her instantly.

Betty Nabalonge, a resident of Mukudde zone, Nyendo-Mukungwe division, was returning from her sister's house where she went to charge her phone when the dilapidated wall fell on her around 10 a.m.

According to one of the school's neighbours, Joseph Bukenya, they had informed the school administration about the wall's poor condition, but they were reportedly ignored.

According to Yuda Ndyako, who was engaged in the perimeter wall's building, they had requested the proprietor for hardcore stones to create a strong base, but they had waited in futility.

Following Nabalonge's death, locals attempted to demolish what remained of the wall but were dispersed by police who launched tear gas at them.

SP Twaha Kasirye, the police spokesman for the greater Masaka area, stated that the school proprietor will be charged with reckless and negligent behaviour.

Nabalonge's corpse was transported to Masaka Regional Referral Hospital for a forensic examination.

It was also reported that attempts to talk with the school officials were unsuccessful after journalists were asked to leave the school premises.
