Scores Killed In An Earthquake In Iran

An earthquake in northwestern Iran killed five people and injured 120, according to reports.

The Iranian Seismological Center said the earthquake with a 5.9-magnitude quake struck about 120 kilometres (75 miles) southeast of the city of Tabriz, in East Azerbaijan Province, in the early hours of the morning.

It was described as “moderate”, and was eight kilometres (five miles) deep, followed by five aftershocks.

Mohammad-Reza Pourmohammadi, the provincial governor, told local media that at least 30 houses had been destroyed and the quake was concentrated in two areas. He also said that rescue operations were underway in 41 rural villages.

In recent decades, Iran has had a number of major disasters, including the ancient city of Bam, destroyed by a tragic earthquake in 2003 that took 31,000 lives.
