Selles Replaces Jones As Temporary Southampton Manager

Selles Replaces Jones As Temporary Southampton Manager

Ruben Selles

Following Nathan Jones' sacking on February 12th, Southampton appointed Spanish coach Selles, aged 39, as their temporary head coach.

Jones' dismissal was a result of a dismal run of nine losses in 14 games that placed the team at the bottom of the standings with only 18 points.

In his newly confirmed post, Selles led Southampton to a 1-0 win against Chelsea last Saturday. His next task will be leading the team in their upcoming match against relegation rivals Leeds United.

Jones' departure came only 95 days after he was appointed in November as Ralph Hasenhuettl's replacement, just before the World Cup break. Selles is now Southampton's third head coach this season, having been in interim charge when Hasenhuettl was sacked in November.

During this time, he oversaw a League Cup penalty shootout win over Sheffield Wednesday. Selles joined Southampton in July 2022 as an assistant to Hasenhuettl and has previously managed Valencia's under-18 team, as well as having coaching experience in Greece, Denmark, and Azerbaijan.

According to British media reports, negotiations between Southampton and former Leeds manager Jesse Marsch broke down over the length of a contract before Selles was appointed. With only five wins from 23 games, Southampton currently sits three points away from safety before their match against Leeds, who are one place higher with 19 points.
