Senate Approves Buhari’s Extension Of 2020 Budget Implemen

The National Assembly has approved President Muhammadu Buhari's extension of the implementation of the capital components of the 2020 budget from December 31, 2020, to March 31, 2021.

AllNews gathered that President Buhari, through his Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Mrs. Zainab Ahmed, had written a letter to the National Assembly on Tuesday, requested the extension to enable the executive to implement the capital aspect of the budget.

The President had cited the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic which prevented the ministries, departments, and agencies of government to carry out the implementation of capital aspects of the budget.

The President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, after the approval, assured Nigerians that the development did not alter the January to December budget cycle.

This online news platform had reports that the National Assembly will on Monday hold a special session to pass the 2021 budget.

Lawan made this known on Wednesday during plenary following a motion moved by the Senate Leader, Yahaya Abdullahi from APC – Kebbi North; and seconded by the Minority Leader, Enyinnaya Abaribe from PDP – Abia South

According to the Senate President, the delay in the passage of the budget was to allow the Appropriations Committee to include a late request for additional expenditures from the Executive arm of government.
