Senator Alli mourns Afonja's passing

Senator Sharafadeen Alli has mourned the death of a former Minister of Labour and Productivity and Chairman of First Bank Nigeria, Ajibola Afonja.

Alli on Monday also said he has lost a mentor and respected Nigerian.

Afonja died at the age of 82 on Sunday night at the University College Hospital in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Alli, who is the Senator representing Oyo South Senatorial District in the National Assembly under the All Progressives Congress, APC, in a statement personally signed in Ibadan, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Afonja, who was described as “a mentor, father, and distinguished personality.”

He said his passing marked the end of an era for many who knew him personally, as his contributions to Nigeria and the financial industry were invaluable.

The senator said, “The late Afonja’s leadership at the First Bank and minister were marked by innovation, integrity, and unwavering commitment to excellence. His death has sent shockwaves through the community. His significant contributions to the banking sector, philanthropic causes and Nigeria at large cannot be overemphasised.”

The lawmaker stressed the profound sense of loss felt by those who had the privilege of working closely with him, describing Afonja as “a mentor, philanthropist, visionary leader and pillar of the community.”

He commiserated with the good people of Nigeria, the state and Oyo town, extending his deepest condolences to his family members.

Alli acknowledged the shared grief of losing such a prominent and respected leader, urging the family to find solace in the remarkable legacy he left behind.

He, therefore, prayed for the repose of his soul, expressing hope that the memory of his achievements and commitment to the betterment of Nigeria would continue to inspire many.
