Senator Daduut Pushes For Bill  To Give Legal Framework To N

Senator representing Plateau South in the National Assembly Professor Nora Ladi Daduut, on the floor of the National Assembly, added her voice on Thursday, to the bill seeking to give a legal framework to the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), College Jos, Plateau, which scaled second reading in the Senate.

The bill was sponsored by the senator representing Plateau North, Istifanus Gyang. The bill titled “A Bill for an Act to establish the Nigerian Television Authority, NTA, College Jos and for related matters, 2022, was read for the first time on Tuesday, March 15.

Gyang said that the bill sought to provide a legal framework for the institute which was a reputable citadel of learning.

According to Gyang, the bill also seeks to make the college undertake the training of broadcasters, engineers/technologists, journalists, content producers, information and communication technologists among others.

“The television and broadcast industry has assumed such local, national and global significance that has shaped the opinions and perception of individuals and nations.

“It is a tool for information dissemination and management which requires specialised training,” he said.

Senator Gyang said that the college began operations in 1980 due to rising need for specialised and professional training for NTA personnel in Nigeria.

Supporting the bill, Senator Ibrahim Gobir said that the institute had trained a lot of professionals in the country.

“If you take a statistics, you will discover that almost every member of the NTA went through that school."

“There is no controversy about the institution. It is so good, so reputable,” Gobir said.

Senator Nora Daduut (APC-Plateau South ) who supported the bill said “If all of us will cast our minds back, the coloured television took off from Jos and that was the mother of all coloured television in West Africa.

“We are proud that this college has come to stay but the act to support this institution is very essential."

“Most of the professional journalists that are trained from this college are in the leadership of the NTA,” Daduut further said.

She urged her colleagues to support the bill to make the college viable and more profiting particularly at the time when information was very critical.

Senator Nora Daduut who moved for the adoption of the votes and proceedings of Tuesday, 15th March, 2022 in her words.

"I rise to commend the mover of this Bill because as a product of that school, the institution was very good and I remember the caliber of people that institution has trained."

"The Act to support this institution is very essential and So I stand here to urge all my Distinguished members to support this Bill so as to make this college viable and more profitable," Senator Daduut further added.

President of the Senate Ahmad Lawan, thereafter, referred the bill to the Senate Committee on Information and National Orientation for further legislative work to report back in four weeks.
