Clashes Ensue In Dakar, Senegal Amid Senegalese Opposition Leader's Trial.

Dakar saw clashes between protesters and security forces on Thursday, March 16, 2023, following the trial of opposition leader, Ousmane Sonko.

Young Senegalese demonstrators clashed with the riot police as the trial of main opposition figure Ousmane Sonko began.

Activists and opposition members have been decrying the country's "retreat from democracy" for weeks.

"No one agrees with the way those in charge are governing the country," a teacher stated.

"No one. There is ineffective governance.

"There is inequity. It is visible to everyone with the naked eye.

"You do not require a microscope. You can see what I mean. That is all there is to it.

"That is all there is to it. That is why we are fighting and willing to give our lives."

On his way to court on Thursday morning, Ousmane Sonko was forcibly removed from his vehicle by gendarmes.

Tourism Minister Mame Mbaye Niang, a member of Sall's party, has accused him of slander after accusing him of being chastised by state inspectors for his handling of a rural unemployment scheme.

The 48-year-old has already declared his intention to run for president in 2024, but his path will be hampered by legal obstacles.

Separate charges have been filed against him for allegedly raping a massage parlour employee.

The outcome of the two cases filed against him could determine his eligibility to run for office.
