The coalition of Senegalese opposition parties is calling for the release of Ousmane Sonko and also asking that all the rulings against his charges be dropped while asking the Senegalese people to remain vigilant until justice is served on Sonko's case.
Various sections of Senegal's opposition parties have hailed departing President Macky Sall's decision not to run for re-election as a victory for the people.
Moustapha Guirassy, a member of the opposition alliance Yewwi Askan Wi, spoke to journalists and blamed Macky Sall for the fatalities and destructions that occurred during the recent nationwide protest after the main opposition figure Ousmane Sonko was detained.
"The people triumphed, the people won. It is the triumph of the people. And the victory of the people, the excitement, must not cause us to misjudge what has occurred.
"President Macky Sall has completely disconnected himself from the recent past.
"Totally out of touch with the crisis of confidence," Moustapha stated.
"Today's action must not be used as a ruse to further attack the opposition, isolate opposition leaders, and isolate Ousmane Sonko.
"That is why we are urging everyone to remain watchful and mobilised," said Déthié Fall, a member of the opposition alliance Yewwi Askan Wi.
Sonko is now ineligible to run for office and has been barred from leaving his Dakar house by security personnel after being sentenced to two years in prison on sexual abuse accusations that he denies.
