Serena Williams Breaks Record In Last Outing US Open

Serena Williams Starts US Open With A Win

Serena Williams in what would be her last step on the court for a competitive game, the 40-year old broke the record attendance for the US Open on Monday with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Montenegrin tennis player Danka Kovinic in the first round.

A record of 29,402 fans were in attendance to watch her play at the Arthur Ashe Stadium. The total number was actually more than that. With 41,930 fans for the opening day session added to 29,402 takes the total to 71,332 -- the second-highest single-day attendance in US Open history.

Among those in attendance were celebrities and politicians like Bill Clinton, Queen Latifah, Mike Tyson, and Anna Wintour but the biggest Serena fan present was Olympia who wore a matching outfit with her.

The American tennis champion was dressed in her own design with a train, crystals, diamonds, and gold while her sponsor Nike issued out diamond encrusted shoes to her.

Record-Chasing Serena Williams

Serena also broke what we can call a generational record, she has now won at 3 stages in her life at the US Open -- in her 20s, 30s, and 40s.

Her total career win in New York is 107 with 102 of them coming from the Arthur Ashe Stadium.

She is already scheduled to play doubles later this week with older sister Venus, but Serena landed another singles date, with No. 2 seed Anett Kontaveit, on Wednesday. The anticipation, like Williams' legacy, will be huge.

Serena is also one short of Australian Margaret Court's all-time record, something she can break if she can win the title.

Her first assignment was beating Kovinic, ranked 80th in the world, and there was a thunderous noise when she took the first of three match points to ensure her singles career was not over yet.

Williams jumped on the spot when Kovinic's backhand return hit the net, then twirled ecstatically in the centre of the court before blowing kisses to her adoring fans when she had returned to her seat to soak in the occasion.
