AC Milan failed to secure a crucial victory in the race for Champions League qualification on Monday, settling for a disappointing 1-1 draw against struggling Salernitana at the San Siro.
The defending champions could have levelled with second-placed Inter Milan on 50 points, but instead, remain in fourth place.
After Olivier Giroud's header put Milan in front on the stroke of halftime, Boulaye Dia equalized for Salernitana in the 61st minute.
Milan coach Stefano Pioli expressed his disappointment in the team's performance, stating that they needed to improve mentally and grow up.
Despite having the opportunity to take the lead midway through the second half from a penalty kick, Milan failed to capitalize and were denied by Salernitana's Guillermo Ochoa.
Salernitana remain in 16th place, seven points clear of the relegation zone, while Inter Milan and AC Milan continue their battle for second place in Serie A.
