Atalanta striker Rasmus Hojlund emerged as the hero of the night, scoring a late winner to seal a 2-1 victory over Empoli in a Serie A match on Friday.
The game started with both teams evenly matched, but Empoli took the lead just before halftime when Tyronne Ebuehi pounced on a loose ball inside the Atalanta box and fired it past goalkeeper Juan Musso.
Atalanta continued to press forward in the second half, and their efforts finally paid off when Marten de Roon headed in a cross from Matteo Ruggeri in the 58th minute to equalize.
Despite their dominance, Atalanta were unable to find the back of the net, with Ruggeri squandering a golden opportunity to put his side ahead.
However, Hojlund, who had only been on the pitch for seven minutes, proved to be the match-winner, smashing a shot into the top right corner of the Empoli net in the 86th minute to send the home fans into raptures.
The victory was a much-needed boost for Atalanta, who had gone four matches without a win in the league, and moved them up to sixth in the standings with 45 points.
Empoli, on the other hand, extended their winless streak to ten games and remained in 14th place on 28 points.
Meanwhile, in another match played on the same day, Sassuolo secured a 1-0 win over Spezia, thanks to a Domenico Berardi penalty in the second half.
The win took Sassuolo to 10th place in the table with 36 points, while Spezia remained in 17th place, five points clear of the relegation zone.
