Lazio secured a crucial 2-0 victory over Sassuolo in Serie A on Wednesday, which sent them back to second place and delayed Napoli's title celebrations.
Goals by Felipe Anderson and Toma Basic earned Lazio the victory and put them one point ahead of Juventus with a total of 64 points.
Lazio were under immense pressure following Juventus' 2-1 victory over Lecce earlier in the day. A draw or a loss against Sassuolo would have given Napoli an unassailable lead before their match at Udinese on Thursday.
The match began with confusion, as Ciro Immobile's goal was first awarded after a lengthy VAR check, only to be disallowed moments later. However, Lazio quickly found their rhythm, and Felipe Anderson put them in front in the 14th minute with a well-placed finish.
Sassuolo tried to mount a comeback and came close to scoring when Davide Frattesi hit the crossbar just before half-time. However, Lazio defended resolutely and sealed the win in stoppage time with Toma Basic's tap-in.
The victory was a massive relief for Lazio and their coach Maurizio Sarri, who can now breathe a little easier as they chase a top-four finish. Napoli will have to wait a little longer to celebrate their first Serie A title since 1990, while Lazio can still dream of catching up with them in the final few games of the season.
