Serie A: Vecino's Strike Stuns Leaders Napoli As Lazio Grab Shocking Win

Serie A: Vecino's Strike Stuns Leaders Napoli As Lazio Grab

Matias Vecino

Matias Vecino's wonder strike led Lazio to a shocking 1-0 victory against Serie A leaders, Napoli on Friday night.

The Uruguayan midfielder unleashed a thumping half-volley from 25 yards that whistled past Napoli's goalkeeper and sent Lazio into second place on the table, still trailing the leaders by 17 points.

Vecino had come close to opening the scoring earlier, but Napoli's captain, Giovanni Di Lorenzo, headed his effort over the bar from under his crossbar.

However, Vecino was not to be denied, and his goal proved to be the difference in a tightly contested game.

Napoli's eight-game winning streak was on 19 of their last 20 in Serie A, they could not find the net against a resolute Lazio side.

Victor Osimhen, the league's top scorer, came close to equalizing for the hosts when he headed against the bar from a Khvicha Kvaratskhelia cross, but Ivan Provedel kept out the rebound.

Lazio had their chances too, with Sergej Milinkovic-Savic almost adding to their lead with a late free-kick that grazed the crossbar.

The win was Lazio's third in a row, and it lifted them above both Milan clubs in the standings.

Napoli remains the overwhelming favourite for the title, but they have some tough fixtures ahead, including games against Atalanta, AC Milan, Juventus, and Inter Milan.

The setback could be the wake-up they need having only failed to win four times in 25 Serie A matches this season, and their quest for their first title since 1990 continues.
