Sheikh Gumi Asks FG To Give Bandits ‘Blanket Amnesty’

Popular Islamic Scholar, Sheikh Gumi, has asked the Federal Government to grant ‘blanket amnesty’ to bandits willing to make peace if the current security situation must be tackled.

The Islamic scholar said this on Friday while addressing journalists in Minna, the Niger State capital. The cleric made this known after he visited the camps of some bandits operating in Niger State. He added that some bandits’ complaint that they were being killed and maimed unjustly.

On his discussion during his secret visit to the bandits, Gumi said there was a positive response from the bandits holding the Kagara school students and staff captive.

However, he did not say if the students have been released or not.

“The outcome is very positive because we have worrying factions. Each faction is saying they have their own complaints and grievances which are very simple. There is hope that we can resolve this.

“I appeal to the government and recommend that the government should do to them exactly what they did to the Niger Delta militants and give them a blanket amnesty. Then if anybody will continue we will deal with him,” Gumi Said.

Gumi’s comment comes a few days after gunmen attacked Government Science College, Kagara, Rafi Local Government Area of Niger State around 2 am and abducted a number of students, teachers and many others.

The school principal who escaped from the attack confirmed that the operation started from the staff quarters where members of staff were abducted before they gained access to students’ hostels.
