A Mauritius court has sentenced a ship captain and his second in command to 20 Months Jail term over the spillage of fuel into the pristine water of Mauritius.
The Magistrate court declared on Monday that the court had taken into consideration the fact that both defendants pleaded guilty and apologised for their crimes.
In the magistrates' announcement; “The captain and his second-in-command were irresponsible and did not deliver as they should on their duties.”
"The ship sailed from Singapore to Brazil with 3,800 tonnes of fuel oil and 200 tonnes of diesel on board. More than 1,000 tonnes of oil seeped into the waters before salvage crews were able to remove all the remaining fuel."
Days after the accident, thousands of volunteers went to the coast wearing rubber boots, gloves and scrubbing the rocks to clear the oils off the waters.
