Sokoto Boat Mishap Claims 15 Attending Maulud Celebration

Following a boat accident in Shagari local government area of Sokoto state, no fewer than fifteen villagers have lost their lives while attending Maulud Celebration. 

The incident which happened yesterday (Tuesday) evening left people shocked.

According to reports, ten of the victims survived the accident.

While confirming the incident to Daily Trust, the chairman of Shagari LGA, Aliyu Abubakar Dantani said the victims numbering 25 were from different villages heading for the celebration elsewhere. 

According to him: “They were 25 onboard when the boat capsized but 10 of them were rescued alive. 

"They came from four different villages, converged on one of the villages and from there they entered the canoe.

“They were on their way to another village for the annual Maulud festival but the boat capsized before they reached their destination.

“Fifteen persons drowned but their bodies were later recovered and buried according to the Islamic rites.”

The council area had recorded series of boat accidents in the past.

Recall that in 2021, the Sokoto state governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal had promised to provide life jackets to the riverine communities.

Reacting to the issue, the council chairman said the issue "Is still on course.”
