Sokoto Court Remands Man For Raping, Sharing 16-Year-Old Gir

On Monday, a Chief Magistrate Court in Sokoto remanded one Aminu Hayatu-Tafida, son of a political appointee in the Sokoto State Government, for having unlawful sexual intercourse with a 16-year-old girl and sharing her nude video across social media platforms.

It was reported that Hayatu-Tafida raped the victim and conspired with three others – Umar Abubakar, Mas’ud Abubakar Gidado, and Aliyu Shehu Kangiwa – to circulate the rape video.

The prosecuting officer, Samuel Sule, told the court that the victim’s mother reported that Hayatu-Tafida had sometimes in 2017, lured the 16-year-old girl to a hotel, had unlawful carnal knowledge with her, and recorded her nudity in an 18 seconds video clip.

This led to the cancellation of the victim’s wedding which was supposed to take place in October.

According to Sule, the offence is contrary to the penal code law and laws of Sokoto State.

In his ruling, the Chief Magistrate, Shuaibu Ahmad, ordered that the accused be remanded to the Sokoto Correctional Center to enable the police to complete investigation on the case.

He, however, granted the three accused people bail in the sum of N500, 000 and adjourned the case to October 19 for mention.
