South Africa: 10 Family Members Killed In Mass Shooting

Ten members of the same family, seven of them women, were killed in a mass shooting at a house in South Africa, police said on Friday.

Initial reports stated that they were ambushed by unidentified gunmen at the residence in Pietermaritzburg, a city in the eastern KwaZulu-Natal province, according to police.

The shooting took place either late on Thursday or early on Friday.

Bheki Cele, the police minister, was scheduled to stop by the scene on Friday.

There have been numerous mass shootings in recent years, and South Africa has one of the highest homicide rates in the entire world.

At a birthday celebration in the south coast city of Gqeberha in January, eight people were shot and killed.

16 people lost their lives in a mass shooting that occurred at a bar in the Soweto neighbourhood of Johannesburg last year.

A group of armed men, some of whom were brandishing rifles, opened fire on patrons.
