10-Year-Old Attempts Suicide After Assault By Father
A 10-year-old girl attempted suicide after she was allegedly assaulted by her father in the afternoon of Friday, January 6.
Residents of a block of flats in Verulam, northern KwaZulu-Natal (suburb withheld), phoned Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) at 3:52 p.m., asking for help for the child.
The 10-year-old told a female RUSA member that she was playing with her twin brother and older sibling when she was hurt.
She began crying and vomiting after her father reportedly assaulted her and encouraged her to commit suicide.
“The girl wrote a suicide note before she entered a bedroom which stated that her family should not enter the room as she intended on ending her life.
"She then tied two scarves together. She secured one end to her neck before she climbed onto a cupboard,” RUSA detailed.
“The minor was in the process of fastening the other end of the scarf to an extension cord that was mounted to the wall when her 13-year-old sibling entered the room and prevented her from jumping off the cupboard.
"He allegedly tore the suicide note (pictured),” RUSA further detailed.
Neighbours reportedly interfered after hearing the disturbance.
The Verulam SAPS were summoned to the location and are investigating further according to reports.
