A cash-in-transit security guard was shot when he and his colleagues were robbed in Silverton, Pretoria, on Friday.
While issuing a statement on the incident on Saturday, police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Robert Netshiunda said the gunmen were in multiple vehicles.
While they were in their armoured vehicle, the five gunmen attacked the security guard and his colleagues on Waterloo road.
"The security guard who was driving was reportedly shot in the shoulder and was airlifted to the hospital," Netshiunda added.
The assailants fled the scene with one rifle and an unspecified sum of money.
The cash van contained an additional sum of cash that was not disclosed.
"Further reports also indicate that the suspects fired shots randomly at motorists but no one was injured," Netshiunda said.
