South Africa: Fugitive Gunned Down During Shootout With Poli

A Fugitive Was Shot Dead By The SA Police During A Shootout on Thursday, February 2, 2023.

An alleged fugitive was gunned down during a shootout with police on Thursday afternoon in Mattafin, Nelspruit.

Police got information regarding the fugitive observed in Mattafin, according to Mpumalanga police spokesperson Selvy Mohlala.

“The suspect, identified as Bheki Martin Phiri, 28, was wanted for escaping from lawful custody on November 11, 2022, as well as for a case of attempted murder where a police sergeant, 40, was shot and wounded by the suspect on December 22, 2022.”

After receiving information regarding his whereabouts, officers drove to the specified location.

Phiri allegedly observed the officers and opened fire on them upon arrival.

“They responded accordingly and defended themselves, whereby the suspect was fatally shot.

"A firearm as well as live ammunition were found next to the suspect.

"He was certified dead at the scene by the paramedics.”

According to Mohlala, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate has opened a case of murder and will carry out additional research.
