An alleged South African dreaded hitman linked to a dozen deaths in several parts of the country has been killed in a late-night shootout with police in Cape Town's Lwandle neighbourhood of the country.
The 29-year-old suspect has been a sought fugitive in at least ten cases involving the deaths of 12 individuals in Lwandle between February 2022 and March 2022.
Lt-Col Malcolm Pojie, a police spokesperson, said the suspect was tracked down by detectives on Sunday night and "discharged his firearm in the direction of the police members to evade arrest."
"The members replied by returning fire, and the suspect was fatally wounded... The members discovered and confiscated a pistol and ammo found in the deceased's possession."
Two of his accused accomplices, 32 and 36 years old, were also apprehended.
A triple murder, a double murder, four murders, two attempted murders (one against a police officer), a guest house robbery, and possession of stolen items from one of the deceased victims are all linked to the three.
The two suspects are expected to appear in court shortly.
