South Africa: One Killed In Shootout At Primary School

One of the suspects was Killed Amid the shootout At the South African Primary School.

A suspect was killed following a shootout outside Northcliff Primary School in Johannesburg today, Thursday, January 26, 2023. 

At about 1.25 pm, an SCP Security Reaction Officer was standing down outside the school for visibility when two individuals arrived on foot and fired numerous rounds to disarm the officer; the officer retaliated and a gunfight ensued.

According to Suburban Control Centre, the suspects escaped and a vehicle pursuit proceeded through Fairland to Vaaljakkals Ave in Weltevredenpark, where another gunfire occurred, resulting in the death of one suspect.

“The deceased suspect was left by his accomplices who fled in a White Toyota Quest on Ontdekkers Road, Roodepoort evading arrest”, police stated. 

The suspects' car has also been linked to other robberies in and around Johannesburg, according to Suburban Control Centre.

The organisation also stated that no onlookers or students were injured at either gunfire location.

The South African primary school where the incident occurred released a statement following the incident. 

“We are aware that the security incident that happened outside our school today before school ended has upset a number of our Learners and Parents. 

"Our Educators implemented our safety lockdown procedures as soon as they happened to keep all our Learners and Educators safe. 

"We only allowed the children out the gates once it was safe to do so.

"We will have counselling available for Learners and Parents, who were at the school when it happened, should anyone need it. 

"Trauma Counsellors from the Community Forum will come to see our Learners tomorrow."

Despite the trauma, it has caused, the SCP officer has been praised by the community for swiftness and for taking down one of the criminals.
