Sub-Saharan's largest industrial power, South Africa, has reported 3,267 fresh coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, making it the biggest recorded number of cases for the country.
South Africa has a total of 40,792 coronavirus cases, as reported by the country's health ministry, adding that the death toll jumped to 848 after it recorded 56 new deaths.
The bulk of the cases in the country emerged from the Western Cape region where the health care system is overwhelmed by the number of cases reported.
South Africa remains the hardest-hit country in sub-Sharan Africa.

A lockdown was imposed on the country on March 27 by President Cyril Ramaphosa in a bid to stem the spread of the deadly disease.
Although the country's cases of infections are on the rise, the lockdown imposed has gradually been eased by the country's government in an effort to revive the economy that has slipped into a recession.
