South Africa: Search Begins For 15 People Swept Away During

Search is underway for 15 people who have been swept away during baptism in the Jukskei river on Saturday.

Already, two people have been confirmed dead after they drowned and 15 others are missing.

Johannesburg Emergency Services spokesperson, Robert Mulaudzi confirmed the tragic incident when the search for the 15 people resumed on Sunday.

The search began on Saturday afternoon but was called off on Saturday night.

Mulaudzi stated that the group was performing a baptism at the time of the incident.

Mulaudzi told news media that around 33 church members were attending a baptism ritual along the stream.

A storm then caused the water levels to rise.

He also told the news media that one congregant was rescued, two others drowned, and some others made it back to safety while 15 people are still missing.

Religious ceremonies, such as baptisms, are typically popular during the holiday season, but water levels are high, making this dangerous.

Mulaudzi advised those attending these religious gatherings to take precautions.
